Sulphuric acid (H2SO4)

Originally known as oil of vitriol (as named by its discoverer Jabir Ibn Hayyan, the Muslim alchemist in the 8th century). Sulphuric acid is a strong mineral acid and it is one of the top products of the chemical industry.

Uses: Sulphuric acid has broad field of applications such as:

  1. Ore processing,
  2. Fertilisers manufacturing,
  3. Oil refining,
  4. Wastewater processing,
  5. Chemical synthesis,
  6. Production of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) by what is known as wet method (around 60% of produced sulphuric acid is used to produce phosphoric acid).
  7. Lead-acid batteries.
  8. Dehydration agent to remove water and dry carbohydrates and gases, e.g. N2, O2, CO2 and SO2.
